Remember: Your House is NOT the Landfill
This is part of Stewie's Guide to Ruthlessly Declutter Your Clothes Today.
Growing up in California, my Grandparents had a large RV pad on the side of their house. But instead of an RV, it held two broken-down, rusting cars.
I don’t know if they thought they’d get these cars running again or were waiting for the right time to sell them for scrap. But year after year, both cars just sat there—motionless, slowly decaying.
When my grandparents moved in 1996, the cars were still there, exactly as they had been. They had served no purpose; no one had used them, yet they had taken up space for years.
And here’s the thing: houses are not meant to be graveyards for things we will never use.
Your Home is Not the Landfill
I know this sounds obvious, but it’s something we all forget from time to time.
We hold onto things long past their usefulness, as if our homes are just storage units for stuff with no future.
This might sound strange, but everything we own is slowly decaying. Clothes will fade and unravel, books will yellow on the shelf, and electronics will be obsolete in a few years. Nothing is timeless and eternal.
And if something has no value to you now, keeping it won’t stop it from falling apart. It won’t suddenly make it useful again.
So why hold onto things already at the end of their life cycle?
Letting Go is a Kindness
I know that getting rid of things—especially things that once had meaning—can feel wasteful. But keeping things you don’t use, don’t love, and don’t need? That’s the real waste.
Because when you hold onto things that no longer serve you, your home becomes a storage depot for the past instead of a space for living.
You deserve better than that.
So today, take a look around. What are you keeping just because it’s there? What’s taking up space without adding value?
And then ask yourself, “Is this something I want in my life? Or is it just something I’ve been unwilling to let go of?”
If it’s the latter, maybe it’s time to set it free.
Because your home is not a landfill. It’s a place for life, energy, and the things that truly matter.
